a tree for a blog

it's 38C in manila and like the trees, i'm wilting. not melting, wilting. i'm an earth person; i thrive on luscious landscapes. so when global warming hit our corner of the world, i wilt along with my beloved trees.

in school, we were told that burning produces carbon dioxide. in some areas in the philippines, the kaingin method is still used to clear the land. people start a bushfire to clear the land of weeds, plants and trees, and the land is to be used for crops. imagine the carbon dioxide they produce just to clear a patch of land. of course, these people are unaware of that. what they know is that they need the land, and that is the fastest way to get it. most of our mountains are bald and brown because people did not re-plant the trees they took. i told myself that i would never burn or cut a tree, unless i really have to. and in case that happens, i'll make sure i'll plant three new ones to replace the one that fell.

so imagine my consternation when i found out that blogging produces carbon dioxide. what?! how can that happen? here i am, sitting in the confines of my office, typing away indoors, away from the trees. turns out that since the trees help cool the environment, the more time you spend on your computer, the warmer the environment gets because we have fewer trees. it does make sense.

good thing there is a movement called my blog is carbon neutral that promises to plant a tree for every blog that joins their initiative. they plant a tree to neutralize the carbon dioxide that your blog emits. cool, huh?  check out their website to learn more.

as a mom, i fear for my child's future. i'm partly guilty why our planet is at its current state. i want my child to see a tree in all it's glory. i want him to experience climbing its branches, to relax in its shade. for that, i am taking a stand. from now on...
